Siesta Beach - #1 Beach in America!Posted by Brandy Coffey on Thursday, June 2nd, 2011 at 11:41am.
The results of Dr. Beach's 21st annual Top 10 Beach List have been released, and we're proud to announce that Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, Florida was voted number 1!
How can a beach even be considered for this type of award? The famous Dr. Beach (America's Foremost Beach Expert) takes a scientific approach toward judging the nominations. He applies a score of 1-5 to a list of 50 strict standards used to establish a final rating. Obvious criteria include things such as:
Beach material (sand, stone, etc.), sand softness, water temperature, number of waves, beach slope, rip currents, amount of algae, wildlife, presence of sewage or runoff, amount of trash, and whether the grounds are well-kept. Nominees are also rated on such factors as, "free use of beach" (i.e. is it overloaded with boaters, surfers, etc.), number of dogs running around, pests (biting insects), and weather considerations (amount of rain, sunny days, air temperature, & wind speed).
This was no easy victory - Siesta Beach had some stiff competition against gorgeous beaches in North Carolina, Hawaii, San Diego, Cape Cod, New York, and 2 other Florida contenders. I'm not certain of our final winning score, but here is Dr. Beach's official summary of Siesta Beach:
"With some of the finest, whitest sand in the world, this beach attracts sand collectors from all over. Siesta Beach has clear, warm waters that serve for ideal swimming. The beach is hundreds of yards wide in the shape of a crescent, due to anchoring of onshore rocks to the north and a unique underwater formation of coral rock and caves, providing for great snorkeling and scuba diving. This beach is great for volleyball and other types of recreational fitness."
There you have it folks, the numbers don't lie. We've always known that the Siesta Key beaches are among the best in the world, but now it's official.
